The Presbyterian Church is a representative form of church democracy initiated by John Calvin in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1550's. The first Presbyterian system was inaugurated in 1559 by John Knox in Scotland. In 1620, Presbyterians began immigrating to the American Colonies. By 1706, growth of the Presbyterian presence in the Colonies called for the organization of the first Presbytery. Ten years later, the first Synod was formed. On May 21, 1789, the first Presbyterian General Assembly convened in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Presbyterian Church (U. S.A.) celebrated its 200 years as an American Church on May 21, 1989 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The Sunrise Presbyterian Church began its ministry outreach to the surrounding community on the corner of Miami Gardens Drive and N.W. 68th Avenue, Miami, Florida in 1970 with 35 members. The congregation was chartered a year later. Our congregation celebrates its 40th anniversary May 22, 2011.

We Believe
"All power in heaven and earth is given to Jesus Christ by Almighty God, who raised Christ from the dead and set him above all rule and authority, all power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. God has put all things under the Lordship of Jesus Christ and has made Christ Head of the church, which is his body."
Our Theology
Central to our theology, says our Book of Order, is "the affirmation of the majesty, holiness, and providence of God who creates, sustains, rules, and redeems the world in the freedom of sovereign righteousness and love." Such a faith in the sovereignty of God has always insisted that there is no area of life, private or public, outside of the realm of God's active love and justice.
Great Ends of the Church
The six "great ends of the church" outlined in the Book of Order of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) are:
1. The proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind
2. The shelter, nurture and spiritual fellowship of the children of God
3. The maintenance of divine worship
4. The preservation of the truth
5. The promotion of social righteousness
6. The exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world
